Holiday Idea!
STOP THE SUMMER SLIDE
It is well documented that students often 'slide' back in their learning over long breaks from school. TOGETHER WE CAN STOP THIS!
If you are stuck for things to do over the holidays, especially on the rainy days, here's an idea.
Our local library has a selection of readers, leveled the same as the ones your children have been reading at school. Check out the photos below to see what they look like. You can join the library and borrow these for free.
Students in Room 2 have learnt to use the 5 finger rule to check the level of these books, and they know the colour of the books they can read. (One finger up for each word they don't know on one page. 5 or more fingers = the book is too hard for them, but could be shared with an adult. 3 fingers = just right. 0-1 finger = too easy.)
This extra reading practice will help your child retain their learning over the summer break, and prevent 'The Summer Slide'.
If you have any questions, the librarians will be more than happy to assist you.
