We took up a teachable moment when one of our students brought to school their favourite storybook from home. We embraced the moment and integrated the theme into every aspect of our school day.
This book lends itself as the perfect opportunity for teaching the days of the week, sequencing and counting, patterns, poetry, healthy and unhealthy foods, making caterpillars out of egg cartons, sketching and painting caterpillars and butterflies. We are learning to make phonic attempts at words while we write independently. We are learning to produce our own ideas for writing. We are learning to take risks with our writing. We are learning to read our stories back and think... does it make sense???? Children start building the foundations of reading during their early years at school. After one year at school children need to be reading at Green to meet National Standards. Children start their reading program on Magenta then Red then Yellow then Blue then Green and the colours continue. Social Science – Identity, Culture and Organisation
We are learning about Turangawaewae – Our Place. The question being asked is What makes our place special? Today is the start of our journey towards sharing and reflecting on our teaching experiences together.
